America’s breakthrough, Saddam’s Breakdown

As they say, everything that rise goes down sooner or later, the regime of Saddam Hussein experienced a complete breakdown in 2003.

9/11 was a misfortune for America but a greater misfortune for few Muslim countries including Afghanistan and Iraq. Playing like a grandmaster, America ended its game with Saddam’s Iraq by giving it a check-mate by accusing it of possessing arms of mass destruction. Whether Iraq possessed such arms is matter of question, were the spotted? No one knows. But it gave a good reason to America for declare a war against Iraq.

Saddam Hussein had his own plans based on elusive estimation of his capabilities and allowed the occurrence of war. The result of war was predictable without much deviation.

Baghdad was bombed to stone age, so to say. But Saddam and his family were successful to find a hide-out, though not for long. His sons Abhe and Kushe were killed in one of the American army strikes.

On the fateful day of December 13, 2003, Saddam Hussein was captured by American army from a bunker near Tikrit. The man was not recognizable, but he introduced himself as President Saddam of Iraq.

Trial and Execution

When Saddam was captured, many Iraqis came down the streets in celebration, pulling down Saddam’s statues to the ground. That was symbolic for what was to occur.

Three years of trial was ‘played’ in Iraqi courts. There were numerous charges against Saddam. But in a particular charge of mass killings of the inhabitants of the village of Dujail 1982 after a failed assassination attempt against him, he was convicted and sentenced to execution.

Exactly after three years and 17 days of his capture, the former president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein was executed in Baghdad on December 30th 2006. With just two days to go for the New Year, Saddam was hanged early morning before 6 A.M.

It is for us to see and witness the reactions of Islamic world on Saddam’s execution. Many condemned, many more protested, but no one knows what the fundamentalists will bring to us as a New Year gift.
