Odysseus, the son of Laertes, was the ruler of the island kingdom of Ithaca. One of the most prominent leaders of the Trojan War, he is known for his cleverness and his eloquence as a speaker.
Odysseus return from Troy took 10 years and was beset with perils and misfortunes. Penelope, his wife waited for two decades for his return to Ithaca from the Trojan War, not knowing whether he was dead or alive. In this long and painful wait her sole relief was to weep and sigh all day long in what she called her bed of sorrows. Now on his return to Ithaca, Odysseus found himself amidst problems. During Odysseus 20 year absence, his wife Penelope, had remained faithful to him, despite the enormous pressure to remarry. Many suitors had occupied the palace, making merry and behaving insolently with Penelope and their son Telemachus. Odysseus arrived at the palace disguised as a beggar and observed the suitors behavior and his wifes fidelity. With the help of Telemachus he slaughtered the suitors. He restored peace in Ithaca and lived happily with his family. |
