Johannes Gutenberg

"To the blissful inventor of printing. Dedicated to God, the best and greatest. Johannes Gensfleisch the inventor of printing, who earned the highest merit of every nation and every tongue, this monument was set up to the immortal memory of his name by Adam Geltheus. His bones rest in blessed peace in the church of St. Francis in Mainz."
-Obituary dedicated to Gutenberg by Adam Geltheus, a relative, in a book printed in 1499.

"Oh century, oh knowledge, it is a pleasure to live, even if not yet to go to rest. Studies are flourishing, minds are being stimulated !"
-Ulrich Von Holten

"What the rich man of yesterday and the King possessed are now found even in the most modest of homes, namely a book. Thanks first be to the Gods, but also immediately thereafter to the printers who master the outstanding art so cheaply through their ceaseless efforts."
-Sebastian Branhe (in the 15th century)

"...not far from the city of Mainz was a certain Johannes, who bore the surname Gutenberg, who was the very first to have thought up the art of printing, as a result of which books were prepared not with the writing tube and not with the pen, but with letters made from metal and in fact quickly, tastefully and beautifully, verily, this man was worthy that all muses, all arts and all tongues of those who enjoy books should honor him with divine praises and choose him above the Gods and Goddesses, all the more so, the more he has conferred his help on branches of learning and scholars."
-Giullaume Fichet
