Ferdinand MagellanMagellan’s flagship – the Trinidad, was a huge ship. A ship this size usually has three masts – the main mast, the mizen mast and the foremost. Sails were attached with horizontal or diagonal yachts. The rudder was attached to the rear of the ship. The houseman would sit in a small compartment and steer according to the instructions called to him, through a hatch, by the pilot. Time was kept by an hourglass or Ampelator. Magellan’s ship had a few canons – enough to cause an impact on the natives’ stews were cooked in a firebox. Beans, chick peas, rice with a small amount of salted meat constituted major portion of the meal. Because the ship’s water turned putrid very soon, wine was a big part of the daily allowance. Each man would consume two liters of wine per day. So most men were slightly drunk throughout the day.
